2023 VNL May 31 Summary: Croatia Debut Lost, Türkiye Dominates Korea
On the second day of the 2023 VNL, eight teams took to the court to compete in four matches. The day start off with Croatia’s debut in the annual volleyball competition. Having won the 2022 FIVB Challengers Cup, Croatia was eager to make a strong first impression. However, their debut did not go as planned, as they were defeated in straight sets by Bulgaria (25-12, 25-17, 25-19).
In another match in Pool 2, China secured a thrilling victory over Brazil in a hard-fought five-set battle. With Brazil leading 12-10 in the fifth set and just three points away from victory, China mounted an impressive comeback, scoring five consecutive points to ultimately win the match 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12). According to Volleyball World, Chinese outside hitter Li Ying Ying, who scored the most points in the match, credited her team’s strong preparation, connections, and effort for their victory over the formidable Brazilian team.

Meanwhile, in Pool 1, Serbia faced off against the USA in another intense match that went to five sets before the winner was decided. Ultimately, the USA emerged victorious, winning 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-12). Avery Skinner and Khalia Lanier, in their first ever VNL match, scored 19 and 16 points respectively for team USA. According to Volleyball World, Skinner praised her team’s confidence and pressure-free play, which she credited for their hard-fought victory.
The final game of the day saw Türkiye dominate South Korea in straight sets (25-14, 25-17, 26-24) in front of their home fans, securing their first win of the tournament. According to Volleyball World, Turkish coach Daniele Santarelli commented after the match that the team still has a long way to go and some players need more practice, but winning the match was important for the fans, players, and the Federation.
