In addition to the suspension, the Volleyball Federation of Serbia has also been fined 20,000 swiss franc (approximately $22,000 USD). The FIVB will donate the fine to tackle discriminatory behaviour and/or to fund educational programmes on cultural sensitivity for the global Volleyball Family.
The player will now miss the match against Belgium and Canada on 8 June and 12 June respectively.
Following the decision taken by the FIVB panel, the Volleyball Federation of Serbia still insist the gesture wasn’t meant to be provocative or insulting, although they understand the point of view of FIVB.
