FIVB OQT: Netherlands Stages Thrilling Five-Set Comeback Against China

In the final match of September 22nd, at the FIVB Olympic Qualification Tournament hosted in Ningbo, the Netherlands staged an impressive comeback from two sets down to defeat host China in a five-set thriller (18-25, 24-26, 25-19, 26-24, 15-13). Middle blocker Indy Baijens emerged as the top scorer of the match, contributing 22 points for the European side to secure the victory.

China led the fourth set 22-15, but the Netherlands rallied to score five consecutive points, narrowing the gap to 22-20. Despite China extending their lead to 24-21, the Dutch team repeated their five-point streak to turn the tables at 26-24, pushing the match into a decisive fifth set and ultimately clinching the win.

Post-match, Dutch setter Sarah van Aalen credited their comeback in the fourth set to effective serving, including two crucial aces towards the end. She emphasized their perseverance and belief in their abilities. Regarding future matches, van Aalen expressed hope for the team to play with less pressure and more freedom.

In a separate interview, Chinese team captain Yuan Xin Yue expressed satisfaction with their performance in the early stages of the match but acknowledged struggles in the latter half. She admitted to being dissatisfied with her own middle blocking performance and expressed regret over the match’s outcome. Despite the loss, she assured the team’s determination to give their best in the remaining matches.

Yuan also addressed the team’s mindset during the decisive fifth set, acknowledging that, despite the team’s full commitment, their performance was not up to the mark.

Following the match, China’s win-loss record stands at 3-2, while the Netherlands improved to 4-1. Both teams will face the Dominican Republic and the Netherlands in their remaining matches.
