FIVB OQT: Canada Triumphs over Mexico in Straight Sets

On the penultimate day of the FIVB Olympic Qualification Tournament in Pool A Ningbo, Canada secured their fourth victory, defeating Mexico in straight sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-17). Meanwhile, Mexico remains in search of their first win in the tournament.

Kiera Van Ryk of Canada emerged as the top scorer of the match, contributing 17 points to the victory.

In a post-match interview, Canadian libero Julia Murmann complimented Mexico’s performance, acknowledging that they exerted considerable service pressure. She expressed hope for the team to improve their initial contact, which she felt had caused them difficulties.

Canada’s coach, Shannon Winzer, held the view that her team could have played a cleaner game. She emphasized the need for cleaner play in a tournament as intense as this, featuring seven matches over nine days. While she believed they had done enough to secure the win, she felt there was room for more.

Mexico’s team captain, Jocelyn Urias, expressed dissatisfaction with her team’s performance, highlighting certain areas that required attention. Contrary to Coach Winzer’s view, she believed that Canada had played a very clean game. Urias pointed out that there was a lack of communication on the court and that numerous small details needed improvement.

Looking ahead, Canada will face the Czech Republic tomorrow, while Mexico is set to play Ukraine.
