Several Volleyball Rules Changed in 37th FIVB World Congress
February 16, 2021
To improve the flow of the game and ensure spectacular rallies, several changes to the rules of volleyball have been approved in the 37th FIVB World Congress.
Here are some important changes:
- Libero can now be the captain of the team
- Teams can now substitute a player who was expelled or disqualified, even though all six substitutions are used up
- The ball can now be retrieved over the scoring table in its complete extension (previously, the ball can only be recovered on the half of the table that is on the team’s side of the court)
- Simultaneous contact by the blocker and attacker on the attacker’s side of the net is now allowed
All changes approved by the congress will come into force on 1 January 2022 due to the postponement of Tokyo 2020.
